The Common Loon
|
|
Here is a photo of a nesting
loon! What a great sighting
here in Voyageurs National
Park! Did you know that a loon
has solid bones? The heavy
bodied loon can cruise at an
average speed of 75 miles per
hour! Sustained flight speeds
of 108 miles per hour have even
been recorded. The common loon
weighs as much as the bald eagle
but only has half the wing
surface area. That is why loons
can require as much as a quarter
mile of water runway to get
airborne. |
